Exploring Ethnic Enclaves: Toronto's Chinatown
Observing emerging ethnic landscapes in a multicultural city:
The new waves of immigrants have significantly transformed the urban landscapes of Canadian metropolitan regions. Manifestations of ethno-cultural diversity are readily apparent in ethnic retail clusters, residential neighbourhoods, places of worship, community service centres, and other types of public spaces, representing diverse needs of various ethnic groups. The distinct images of such ethnic spaces and places physically differentiate them from their mainstream counterparts. Toronto, as one of the most multicultural cities in the world is an ideal location to observe and experience ethnic landscapes.
For this poster assignment I was asked to visit a section (a neighbourhood or a segment of a street) of my choice in the inner city of Toronto and to incorporate my observations in one 11 x 17, one sided, colour printed poster.
Through qualitative observation and experience, I reported the ethnic/cultural/religious and other forms of diversity embedded in Toronto’s urban landscape(s) and connect them to a theme (or themes) discussed in the readings. This assignment aims to unpack the city through the lens of diversity/multiculturalism and reveal ethno-cultural diversity manifested in everyday urbanism.
